Today In Black History - Mahalia Jackson

On this date in 1911 Mahalia Jackson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is widely regarded as the best gospel singer ever, and was the first "Queen of Gospel Music." In 1950 she became the first gospel singer to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall. Mahalia Jackson died in Chicago on January 27, 1972 of heart failure and diabetes complications.
