On this date in 1934 Sonia Sanchez was born Wilsonia Benita Driver in Birmingham, Alabama. Sanchez is a poet most often associated with the Black Arts Movement. Her poems have always depicted the struggles between black people and white people, between men and women, and between cultures. She was innovative in her use of language and structure while sometimes using Black speech in her poetry.
