On this date in 1966 elected leader and first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, was ousted in a military coup while he was away on a peace mission to Vietnam. As a firm believer in African liberation, Nkrumah pursued a radical pan-African policy, playing a key role in the formation of the Organization of African Unity in 1963.
